Executive Director
ECELAW

Deborah Carver joins ECELAW as Executive Director from a consulting practice, prior to which she held senior executive positions in both public and private sector organizations. Although her professional life has lately focused on the cultural sector – the visual arts, film and television – her academic background and personal interests are grounded in a passion for the environment.

Most recently, Deborah was Executive Director, Special Projects and Interim Vice-President at NSCAD University, with operational responsibility for fund development and communications, and the planning for and construction of the university’s new Port Campus. Until 2002, Deborah was employed at Salter Street Films as VP Communications and then as General Manager of the Independent Film Channel Canada. Her first career was as a lawyer with a large Halifax firm where she spent six years in a litigation practice.

Deborah’s academic background includes an undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Waterloo. She has an LLB from Dalhousie University and an LLM from University of London (England), where her studies included international and environmental law. She was fortunate to work over several years for the Third U.N. Conference on the Law of the Sea.

Deborah has led and served on the boards of a variety of not-for-profit organizations, including a long association with the Port Joli Basin Conservation Society on the south shore of Nova Scotia. Sea kayaking in the summer and hiking with her dog (no matter what the weather) fill her recreational time.
