Sarah Zurel

Sarah grew up in rural Prince Edward Island where her family had an extensive vegetable garden. Her love of the Island and the rural way of life, as well her love of the Atlantic Ocean has stayed with her.  Sarah obtained a BA, Psychology (1991) from Dalhousie University and an LLB from Dalhousie Law School (1994) (now Schulich School of Law). She was called to the Newfoundland and Labrador Bar in 1995 and is a member in good standing of the Law Society of NL.

She has been an active community volunteer and advocate in the St. John’s area for more than 30 years. In 2020, her passion for the environment was reignited when she and her spouse undertook to restore the riparian zone on their previously deforested lake front property.  They engaged with local experts and planted a variety of native trees and plants and created a 15-metre natural buffer.  For this project, she signed a Landowner Stewardship Agreement with SAM (Stewardship Association of Municipalities) and agreed to maintain the ecological values of their lakeside property. Sarah retired in the summer of 2025 from an Insurance Defence Litigation practice and is now dedicated to environmentalism.  She became a Director with the Advisory Committee on the Environment in the Town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s in 2024 and was appointed to the PC-SP Waterbody Buffer Advisory Committee in 2026. Sarah was elected to the East Coast Environmental Law Board in 2026. In her spare time, she can be found hiking the East Coast Trail.
