Since 2015, East Coast Environmental Law has been assessing and reporting on provincial protections for species at risk in Atlantic Canada. More specifically, we’ve been evaluating how provincial governments in Atlantic Canada are performing under their own laws designed to protect species at risk.
Updates on Our Advocacy for Sustainable Offshore Renewable Energy Development
This spring, Bill C-49 passed third reading in the House of Commons and moved to the Senate. After passing second reading by the Senate in early June, the Bill was given to the Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources for detailed consideration.

Advocating for Sustainability-based Offshore Renewable Energy Regulation
In May 2023, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources tabled Bill C-49 in the House of Commons. The Bill is a proposed statute that would introduce new federal-provincial regimes for regulating renewable energy projects in the offshore areas of Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia. East Coast Environmental Law has been engaging actively in the federal government’s consideration of Bill C-49.
