Chad Simmons: Resource and Communication Officer

Chad completed his Master of Science at Dalhousie University in 2021, studying the habitat of rare forest plants in Nova Scotia. Since then, he has worked with several non-profit conservation and science organizations, as well as the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources, across the province on species at risk, biodiversity, invasive species, and ecological monitoring, while helping bring diverse groups together to find common ground on complex environmental issues.

Chad now serves as ECEL's Resource and Communications Officer, managing the organization's communication channels and working alongside staff lawyers to develop public resources.

One of the skills Chad has most enjoyed developing throughout his career is science communication: the ability of breaking down complex topics into components that can be understood and discussed by anyone, regardless of background. He finds it a uniquely rewarding challenge, one without a single "right answer," which keeps it endlessly engaging.

Outside of work, Chad can be found exploring the forests and wetlands of Nova Scotia in search of rare and at-risk species, working to better understand and conserve them. He is currently involved in a research project on the nesting habitat of endangered Chimney Swifts, and along with colleagues has helped identify one of only two known nesting forests for the species in Nova Scotia. Chad also enjoys running, hiking, camping, and gardening, and is actively involved with a new locally owned food co-op in his hometown of Bear River, helping bring healthy, local, and affordable food to the community.
